The Song of the Shore – A Project for Peace and Sümeyra – Alte Oper Frankfurt, 2006
The Song of the Shore is an international project that unites Turkish and Greek cultures, symbolizing peace and shared cultural memory through music. This special concert took place on June 9, 2006, at Frankfurt’s historic Alte Oper, and was dedicated to the memory of Sümeyra.
Sümeyra, who lived in Frankfurt, was an influential Turkish singer, musician, and Saz performer who reinterpreted Anatolian folk music with contemporary sensitivity. Her artistic legacy was honored with deep respect through this performance.
The musical direction and orchestral arrangements were by Hasan Yükselir, joined on stage by the acclaimed Greek mezzo-soprano Alexandra Gravas. This concert brought together the musical traditions of Zeybek and Rembetiko — the two shores of the Aegean — within a symphonic framework, offering audiences a profound artistic and emotional experience.
Born in İzmir and spread from the port of Piraeus to the world, Rembetiko represents a borderless musical heritage.
This performance reconnected Rembetiko with its Anatolian roots and intertwined it with the rhythmic spirit of Zeybek — a musical bridge of friendship and peace.
“It is the voice of cultures intertwined for thousands of years across Thrace, Anatolia, the Mediterranean, and the Aegean. On one shore dances the Manges, on the other the Efe — and this is the Blues of Anatolia: Rembetiko.” — Hasan Yükselir
